We recommend the following books for those customers wishing to explore more deeply some of the scientific issues surrounding the analyses that we perform:

"The Human Inheritance: Genes Language and Evolution"
edited by Bryan Sykes and published by Oxford University Press in 1999.

This contains eight essays by leading academics on all aspects of the revolution in understanding the past that has been triggered by developments in genetics. The book covers the debate about the links between genes, language, and the archaeological record and what they can tell us about human evolution. It is edited for a general readership and there is an extensive bibliography.

"The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee"
by Jared Diamond (ISBN 0 09 991380 1).
Written for the both the general and scientific audience, Jared Diamond explains in a very readable way, the significance of the 2% difference between the chimpanzee, man's closest relative and us, using science and philosophy and just plain logic.

"The Language of the Genes"
written by Steve Jones and published by Flamingo (ISBN 0 00 654676 5).
Winner of the Rhone Poulenc prize for the best science book of 1994. Steve Jones uses his 1991 Reith Lectures as the basis for this book which argues that the evolution of our genes may be compared to the evolution of language. Drawing on complementary studies in anthropology and cultural history as well as the latest discoveries in the field of genetics, the book deals with pedigrees, mutation, natural selection and other processes that led to the origins of humanity and the divergence of human populations from each other and from their primate ancestors.

"Blood of the Isles"
by Professor Bryan Sykes.
It was published in September 2006. A gripping detective story backed up by fascinating science, the book casts new light on our ancestry and reveals what our genes can tell us about our attitudes to ourselves, each other, and to our past.

"The Seven Daughters of Eve"
by Professor Bryan Sykes.
It was published in June 2001 in the UK and has since appeared in over 23 countries. His book explains on an easily digested manner the science that reveals our genetic ancestry. He explains how his scientific research was conducted and how the discoveries that he made changes the way that we all think of our ancestors. An international best seller.

The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey
by Spencer Wells published by Penguin.
In his book, Spencer Wells shows how the truth about our ancestors is hidden in our genetic code, and reveals how developments in the cutting-edge science of population genetics have made it possible not just to discover where our ancestors lived (and who they may have fought, loved, learned from and influenced) but to create a family tree for the whole of humanity.

"Adam’s Curse"
by Professor Bryan Sykes.
It was published in Autumn 2003. The book draws on Bryan’s own work at the forefront of modern genetics and the exciting theories of evolutionary biology. This is a fascinating exploration into the science of sex and gender, and takes a scientific look at what makes men tick.
