Research in Oxford has identified the probable Y-chromosome profile of the feared Mongol warrior Genghis Khan. At its height in the 13th Century AD, the Mongol Empire stretched from the South China Sea to the Persian Gulf – the largest land empire in history. With his army of 200,000 warriors, Genghis Khan swept across Asia, slaughtering the male population! After each conquest, the most beautiful women were kept for the Khan ensuring that he had many descendants.

Y-chromosomes are passed from father to son and the Oxford survey showed that there are now around 16 million men who have inherited their Y-chromosomes directly from Genghis Khan, passed down an unbroken patrilineal line from the Mongol Emperor himself.

What is it?

To allow us to compare your Y-chromosome signature to that of Genghis Khan, we first need to perform a Y-Clan™ analysis. Our Y-Clan™ service analyses your Y-chromosome DNA (yDNA) to establish the link between you and your ancestral clan. There are currently 15 identified and named clans that cover the whole of humanity and these represent the human Y-chromosome haplogroups. Please note that Y-Clan™ signatures correlate (with a probability of up to 97%) with these haplogroups, they do not define them.

As our analysis is performed using ten genetic markers, your results come in the form of a ten-digit Y-Clan™ signature. Scientific research has shown that these Y-Clan™ signatures are inherited, in the majority of cases, with surname over time. This means that your Y-Clan™ signature can be compared with those of others, adding previously inaccessible genetic information to a genealogical research project.

All men carry a Y-chromosome in every cell of their bodies, which is inherited exclusively from their fathers. Indeed, it is the Y-chromosome that makes men male! We despatch directly to you by post a Sampling Kit containing a small brush that we ask you to rub on the inside of your cheek to collect, painlessly, your DNA, which we extract and profile on receipt of the brush. Your DNA is made up of a string of chemicals whose names are abbreviated to the letters A, C, G and T. At particular points on the Y-chromosome, the exact number of letters can vary. The profiling process determines the exact number of letters at particular points or markers; in the case of our Y-Clan™ analysis, ten markers. Once we have these ten numbers, which form your ten-digit Y-Clan™ signature, we can compare this to our extensive reference database and establish the correlation between your Y-Clan™ signature and your paternal ancestral clan.

Further, this signature can then be compared to the specific haplotype that has been identified, on the balance of probability, as that of Genghis Khan himself, to determine if you share your Y-chromosome with the most successful empire builder who ever lived.

For reasons of confidentiality your DNA sample is destroyed immediately after our analysis is completed.

How long does it take?

Sampling Kits are usually despatched within 3-5 working day of receipt of your order. From the time that we receive your sampling brush, it will be approximately six weeks until we send you your results.
